Kids know more than I think they know
I was teaching my class of terrors the other day. One kid named Jacob began yelling for no reason other than to disrupt class. Yelling isn't the correct word for what he was doing, though. It was more of a shriek. It was a high-pitched shrill noise that almost made my ears burst. I walked up to him and said, "If you do that again I'm going to tape your mouth shut." The surprised look on his face instantly told me he knew what I said. Images of an angry boss and parent chewing me out came to my mind. My brain switched into defense mode and I was about to profusely apologize to Jacob, but the surprise on his face turned to excitement. He pulled some tape out of his backpack and proceeded to tape his mouth shut. He thought he was hilarious. He loved having his mouth taped shut, and so did I. He didn't make a sound for the rest of class.
